Recording Your iPad Screen in macOS

Do you wan to record a video of your iPad screen using macOS? Then read on, you intrepid digital daredevil!

I’m using a 2018 iPad Pro 11” and a 2019 16” MacBook Pro on macOS Catalina (version 10.15.5).

  • Physically connect your iPad to your MacBook using the appropriate cable. My connections were all USB-C, so I used a USB-C to USB-C cable.

  • Open Quicktime on your Mac.

  • Go to File > New Movie Recording.

  • Near the middle of your screen, you’ll have a box with a red dot (you may have to hover your mouse pointer in that area to see it).

  • Click on the white arrow pointing down directly to the right of the red dot and select your iPad (see below).

  • You should now see your iPad screen mirrored on your Mac. Click on the red dot to begin recording. Note: the red dot should have turned into a square.

  • Click on the square to stop recording.

  • Quicktime will immediately bring up the video so you can review it and the file should be saved to your desktop.

  • Extra credit: you can import your video to iMovie and make easy edits for a really polished production!
