Week One - Shape Cutting & Collage
The main project was to first cut random shapes out of construction paper. The children were encouraged to cut complex shapes with jagged and curved edges. Once the shapes were cut, they had to create a collage using the shapes. They were able to use markers, oil pastels, or colored pencils to add details and “tell a story” about their collage.
Students developed their fine motor skills through the cutting of complex shapes, practiced dealing with ambiguity, and solved design challenges using their own creativity.
Celine (Kindergarten) was a fast a furious shape cutter! Wonderful variety and use of the space. The smiley faces are a reflection of her kind-hearted and gentle personality.
Leila (Kindergarten) tore through her project with lots of energy and ideas. Initially, she didn't want to add details, but later changed her mind. I like how dynamic her composition turned out.
Like his name might imply, Maverick (1st Grade), took a unique approach to the project. He opted for more conventional shapes, but arranged them in an enigmatic and visually interesting manner. I love how he chose to solve this first design challenge.
