Class Review: Odd Bodies by Tom Froese

After signing up for Skillshare premium, “Odd Bodies” by Tom Froese was the first class I watched. And I’m so glad it was. “Odd Bodies” was informative, liberating, and transformative.

How so? Read on, friend.

Prior to Tom’s class, my creative process typically began as a chaotic hurricane of scribbles. Tom taught me to make slower, more deliberate, and planned strokes. Through that one change, I’ve ended up with more usable concepts and sketches.

I was also relieved to find validation in some of my own personal design choices. The value of minimalism and the beauty in exaggeration. And that a flat and graphic style with judicious and sparing use of texture is acceptable and even valued commercially.

The production and presentation was polished and professional. He employs great lighting, clear audio, and helpful pop-ups to get his message across clearly and efficiently.

If I have any criticism (and it’s rather nit-picky), I’d suggest adding a second camera angle to break-up some of the longer periods of face-to-face instruction.

There’s so much joy and inspiration in seeing a creative thoughtfully and lovingly present his or her work and thought process. And Tom certainly falls into that category.

Overall, time well-spent and I especially appreciate that an award-winning, successful illustrator is taking the time to share his secrets.

Add me to his ever-growing list of fans and admirers.
